Double take: the phenomenon of multiple-tailed lizards
It is well-known that some lizards have the ability to shed and regenerate their tails, but what is less widely appreciated is the fact that sometimes, they regrow two or more tails. Researchers from Curtin University's School of Molecular and Life Sciences in Australia have been investigating such cases, seeking to gain a better insight into this phenomenon.
James Barr explains that documented events were generally limited to opportunistic, single observations of individual lizards in their natural environment. "The limited available research about multiple-tailed lizards has made it difficult for biologists to fully understand their ecological importance, and our study helps to highlight this knowledge gap," he says.
