I have to admit it is something that I’ve wondered about, when I hear that a tortoise has gone missing. True, it might have strayed, or it may have been stolen by thieves, but could there be another villain to blame? As you can read in Joanna Hedley’s casebook this month, urban foxes can and do attack tortoises, and they are more than capable of carrying them off . It is definitely something to bear in mind for the return of spring, and confirms the importance of housing these reptiles in runs outdoors, rather than simply allowing them to wander freely. While on the subject of tortoises, it was good to hear from Lois Hook, who has pioneered the Realm of Reptiles franchise operation, which now extends to three stores, based in Northampton, Milton Keynes and Coventry.
One of her aims has been to help people advance their knowledge of reptiles, and with this in mind, Lois and her team are holding special in-store events that focus on specific groups of species. The Coventry store recently held a very successful day covering tortoises and turtles. This programme is continuing, and the Northampton store will be hosting a special tortoise hibernation morning on November 16th, so if you are in the area, feel free to pop along and learn more about how to help your pet safely through this period. If lizards are your main interest though, there is a day covering the needs of these popular reptiles planned for the Coventry store on November 10th. It is easy to keep up-to-date with forthcoming events as well. All you need to do is to search for and join the Realm of Reptiles’s Facebook and Twitter sites.
