Wagons roll as VTG trial aims to transform freight
A total of nine vehicles will be used to test the ‘iWagon’ monitoring technology.
WAGON leasing company VTG Rail UK and braking equipment supplier Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems (UK), are carrying out a main line trial of nine wagons fitted with digital technology which they claim has the potential to revolutionise performance of rail freight.
VTG says the initial ‘iWagons’ feature 12 innovations including new wheelsets which feature four axle end generators to power patented Wheel Flat Prevention (WFP) technology, which monitors slide of wheelsets and condition of the brakes. The information can be accessed remotely, giving the ability to highlight issues as they occur and the potential to help Network Rail to locate areas where there is low rail adhesion. The ‘iWagons’ also feature axle lock detection.
