WORK on the Tyne & Wear Metro’s £70 million depot complex at South Gosforth in Newcastle should be completed by next month.
The final eight sidings, situated where the original 1923-built maintenance sheds stood (until demolition as part of the redevelopment project) were completed in November. Installation of overhead lines, signalling, walkways and lighting were the next steps, prior to the wires being energised and sidings brought into operation.
The site has been transformed over the course of the last three years, in preparation for the system’s new fleet of five-car 46 Stadler Class 555 units which are due to be phased into service during this year and 2025.
