Swire Shipping’s 7,756dwt container ship Dili Chief, completed by China’s Huanghai Shipbuilding in 2007 as MCP Hamburg, has been acquired by Lae-based Consort Express Lines (Consort) and renamed Papuan Coast for operation along the Papuan coast between Lae and Port Moresby. The 117m by 19.7m vessel is powered by twin Daihatsu diesels giving a service speed of 15 knots and is equipped with two deck cranes of 40-tonne capacity, while up to 318 TEUs can be carried. The former Swire ship will operate alongside three other similar-sized vessels in the Consort fleet: Bougainville Coast, Gazelle Coast and Niugini Coast. They provide a weekly service on the company’s main trade lanes to the New Guinea Islands and the island of Bougainville.
