Ding dong, so which OLED?
The latest semi-affordable TVs from LG and Sony fight it out to see who’s found the perfect blend of performance and features

LG OLED CX
What’s the story?
LG is offering a modest-sized 48in OLED TV for the first time, but the CX range also comprises this 55in model plus 65in and 77in whoppers. Aside from the option of a smaller screen size, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of difference compared to the excellent C9 range it replaces, except it’s a tiny bit cheaper than the outgoing model was this time last year.
Is it any good?
There’s no single area of performance where the CX significantly improves on the C9, but small gains in black-tone detail, contrast, motion and colour fidelity add up to a TV that’s an obvious and worthwhile improvement. Of course, it’s in 4K content with HDR that the LG works best, and Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods with Dolby Vision HDR and a Dolby Atmos soundtrack looks and sounds monumental. Give it the chance and this set will blow your socks off with its accuracy and naturalism, even when asked to take on serious upscaling.
