The Byrds’ David Crosby (second left): a ringing endorsement for singing bassists such as Chris Hillman (far left)

BASS INSTINCT
According to Roger McGuinn [Uncut Take 347, January 2026] David Crosby described playing bass guitar while singing as “like trying to dial two different telephones with two different numbers”. Quite so, and I’ve always been amazed that the likes of Jack Bruce, Paul McCartney and Sting even attempted it, let alone be so good at it.

SHIRES DELIGHT
I enjoyed reading your retrospective of releases for 2025 [Take 346; Review Of The Year 2025] and was surprised by how many of the selections were albums I’d actually bought, including those by Wet Leg, Margo Price, Patterson Hood, Robert Plant and SG Goodman, as well as the archive release of Drive-By Truckers’ Decoration Day. You also switched me on to Wednesday’s Bleeds.
