There’s no doubt about it, dogs are amazing — and this month we’re celebrating that fact in our lead feature ‘Guardian angels’ (page 10), which brings you stories of heroic hounds who have saved the lives of their owners and their families.

But why do they do this? And have you ever wondered how, in similar circumstances, your own dog would behave? I know I have!

Veterinary psychiatrist and specialist in veterinary behavioural medicine Dr Sagi Denenberg has his own take on what motivates domestic dogs to often put their own lives at risk to protect humans — and it all makes for fascinating and uplifting reading.

Also this issue, we’ve got an interview with Dr Fiona Macdonald, who is investigating the causes of Alabama rot, an often fatal disease, which has been hitting the headlines in recent years. Find out all about her research on page 18.

Finally, make sure you check out the article on miniature dogs on page 62 this issue. These tiny sculptures really are works of art, painstakingly and skilfully created by a couple of brilliant artisans. The pictures are quite breathtaking.
