TOP lot in the book section of a February 21 sale at David Lay (18% buyer’s premium) was an archive of close on 200 items relating to James and Alexander Gordon of Letterfourie in Banffshire and the triangular wine trade between Madeira, London and New York their family conducted in the 18th century and later.
This archive sold for £2500 (and there is more to come in August) but it was a very different lot from the Penzance sale that is illustrated left, one for which I turned for explanation to a good friend and neighbour who owns and loves an old convertible ‘Beetle’ that he restored some years ago.
