It was catalogued as 19th century, with a replaced plate, later back batons, small chips and wear, age cracks and the gilt painted surface was thick and not original. Nevertheless, this 4ft 1in (1.25m) high George II-style gilt and gesso mirror, right, was plainly worth a second glance.
Against a £300-500 guide, it sold to the UK trade at £4000 in the Trevanion & Dean (19% buyer’s premium) June 16 auction in Whitchurch.
