A proud day for Arran war veteran

‘It was a nice surprise. I am very proud’

An Arran war veteran, who celebrates his 100th birthday later this month, received an early present this week.

Gilbert Norris from Lamlash has received the highest decoration in France, the Légion d’honneur, for his involvement in the liberation of the country during the Second World War.

The French government has been awarding the rank of Chevalier (Knight) to D-Day veterans from many different countries for several years, as a way of honouring and thanking those who fought and risked their lives.
