DANZA&DANZA International  |  May/june
A floaty, ultra-romantic tulle skirt worn as a mask. Behind it is Virna Toppi, Principal dancer of Bayerisches Staatsballett and La Scala Theatre. This symbolic shot by Raoul Iacometti chosen fo our cover was taken for other purposes, before anyone could have imagined the current situation. Still, the strong emotions evoked by the photograph cannot fail to remind us of the standstill, the uncertainty imposed by the current global health emergency.
But we want to give a sign of hope for the future. So in this issue we will make you discover the new "Corsaire" created by José Carlos Martinez for the Rome Opera Ballet, the brilliant "Don Quijote" by Aleksej Fadeecev reprised by the San Carlo Theatre Ballet and the latest London shows by Alina Cojocaru, Viviana Durante Company and Russell Maliphant; choreographers and artistic directors like Johan Inger and Emily Molnar who never stopped looking to the future, eclectic artists such as Robert Fairchild, neurosciences and Dmitri Shostakovich, an artist whose unstoppable verve and talent would not be dampened even when faced with Soviet censorship and whose scores remain a source of inspiration for many today. Last - if only chronologically - come Edward Clug.
