There are three things, I think, which dictate the decisions we make in December: what we want, what we feel we should do, and what we need. Want. What we want is usually selfindulgent. All I want is to sit in a hot bath eating Maltesers and drinking prosecco – which if I did every night would lead to quite a tragic life. Should. What we feel we should do is something usually for the beneit of others, but often against our own interests. I always feel like I should text people back quicker, but if I’m out in town shopping for presents, I don’t want to be one of those people who walks down a busy high street with their head down ready to take out the next OAP. “Should” doesn’t go very well with “want”.
Need. Then there’s what we “need”. What we need is treading a ine line between “should” and “want”. What we need is to feel like we’ve done the right thing, both by ourselves and by others. This deinitely comes into play during the month of December, and I am here to tell you that if you feel the line wavering somewhere between “should” and “want”, you are doing your best.
