In 1988, I marched to protest Clause 28, when the Thatcher government legislated against the teaching of “the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship”.
It seemed a huge and public slap in the face at a time when our battle for acceptance meant many of us suffered the additional torment of rejection from our “proper” families, who shared the government’s view of us.
