DIVA PUBLISHER LINDA RILEY MEETS DESERT HEARTS DIRECTOR DONNA DEITCH

DONNA DEITCH

The film Desert Hearts celebrated its 30 year anniversary in 2016. For some, it is to lesbian films what West Side Story is to musicals, or what When Harry Met Sally is to romantic comedies. And after all this time, many cite it as the benchmark in lesbian filmmaking. An adaptation of the 1964 book Desert Of The Heart by Jane Rule, the film follows its two lead characters, Vivian Bell, a 35-year-old English professor and “aspiring divorcee” played by Helen Shaver, and Cay Rivvers, a young, self-confident sculptor played by Patricia Charbonneau. The sexual and emotional journey the two women take together is explored against the backdrop of 1959 Reno, Nevada, at a time when the city was considered “divorce capital of the world”. Here, DIVA publisher Linda Riley talks to director Donna Deitch, looking back at the creation of this truly groundbreaking film and its importance in popular culture, ahead of Deitch’s appearance at the DIVA Literary Festival in Birmingham, which celebrates the best lesbian and bisexual authors.
