MRS ZAROFF’S DEATH CERTIFICATE

A vintage BBC publicity synopsis for that 1967 classic The Underwater Menace inadvertently lets slip an abandoned detail from an early draft, in which Professor Zaroff explains that his plan to drain the ocean into the Earth’s molten core, and thus split the planet asunder, is ‘revenge for the deaths of his wife and his mother’.

As motives go, this might seem a trifle peculiar – but then again, there’s very little about The Underwater Menace that isn’t. From start to finish, it’s the Doctor Who equivalent of Plan 9 from Outer Space, and we might as well love it for that. In the finished serial, the ‘wife and mother’ backstory is replaced by an even flimsier motive, as Zaroff grandly explains that he wants to destroy the Earth, with him still on it, for ‘the achievement’. Well, it takes all sorts.
