New Adventures in Space and Time

Matt Strevens is working alongside Chris Chibnall to bring Series 11 to the screen. Although he’s the show’s new executive producer, this isn’t the first time Matt has worked on Doctor Who…

THE DWM INTERVIEW

A glimpse of the new Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) in the atmospheric promotional image released on Tuesday 20 February.

Matt Strevens is looking very dapper. “There you go,” he says, whipping open his suit jacket to reveal the designer label inside. “Well,” he adds with a self-deprecating laugh, “you’ve got to make an effort, haven’t you?”

Matt is in Liverpool with his fellow executive producer Chris Chibnall and co-executive producer Sam Hoyle, promoting Doctor Who at the lavish Showcase event hosted by BBC Worldwide. There is a palpable air of anticipation among the overseas broadcasters who have gathered to learn more about Series 11. Although this is Matt’s first public engagement as executive producer, he’s had quite a while to get used to the scrutiny the show receives. “I knew Doctor Who was a phenomenon, but now we’ve got a new Doctor coming in the attention is huge,” he says. “I’ve come to realise the sheer scale of the operation, and how much the show is loved. I don’t want to sound stuffy, but Doctor Who is an institution. There’s a whole world surrounding the series, both present and past. The biggest revelation for me was the sheer scope of that – you need a production hat, an administrative hat, a branding hat… I feel like a crazy milliner at times!”

Matt’s personal history with Doctor Who goes way back to his childhood. “I’ve got very vague memories of watching Jon Pertwee,” he says, “but my first formulated memory of the show is watching the regeneration from Pertwee to Tom Baker. And then, as far as I remember it, Tom jumps out from the TARDIS and he’s wearing lots of different costumes. One of them’s a Pierrot… is that right? When was the regeneration… 1974?”
