Registration districts
Registration districts have existed in England and Wales since 1837 (they ceased in Wales in 1996). These were the districts used to compile the decennial censuses of 1851 through to 1911. If you know the name of the district where your ancestor lived you can use that either to focus your search or to help you discover whether you have the correct record if there are a few possibilities. You can find and alphabetical list of England and Wales districts here: https://familytr.ee/ftreg
