FAMILY TREE ACADEMY
Census savvy:
The answer
1 We displayed a census page showing the Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone, and asked the following:
Q: Which census year is this?
A: A quick Google search will show that Gladstone was born in December 1809; he is aged 71 on the census shown so it’s the 1881 Census.
Q: Where was the Prime Minister’s wife born?
A: The enumerator has written ‘N. Wales, Hawarden’. As counties were supposed to be given, a clerk at the census office has added the word Flint in the right-hand column.
Q: What was the name of his butler?
A: The entry reads P Walter Hyam. His full (correct) name was Pearl Walter Hyem.
Mystery paper:
The answers
2 The next document, from 1794, concerned a man named James Wilson.
Q: What is this document?
A: This is what’s known as a Settlement Examination, carried out by the Poor Law authorities to establish a person’s legal place of settlement. In this case, Elizabeth Gaskin was representing her son (whose wife was ill) as he was ‘abroad in the 15th Regiment of Light Dragoons’.
