My mother’s Croft line

With no further ado, here’s Stuart Cresswell’s 1,000 words on his mother’s father’s line – the Crofts
Upwell Hall built by George James Huddleston

My mother’s paternal family ‘begins’ with James Croft at the end of the 1500s. He was a clothier in Leeds – he managed the wool from sheep to weaver. His son James II of Boar Lane, Leeds was also a clothier. James II’s son Thomas was rector of Broughton by Brigg, Lincolnshire. He married twice and by his second wife had James III. James III was born in 1688 and moved to London where he was in partnership with George Huddleston of Croydon (but of the Lincolnshire family). They were an up-market gentleman’s outfitter in King Street, Covent Garden. The partnership started about 1720 and was being wound up when James III died in 1753. His son James IV completed the closure. James IV’s son George had George Huddleston as godfather. George Huddleston had no children so, after life interests, he left his estate to a succession of beneficiaries in turn. George Croft was the fifth such and survived the life interests to inherit – provided he took the name and arms of Huddleston only, which he did in 1819.
