Hunger’s a dreadful political tool; it works both ways. On these islands we know the reach of the hunger striker whether a suffragette 100 years ago or an Irish Republican in the 1980s. Governments within this democracy today though deny citizens the wherewithal from which to feed themselves, sanitised vocabulary leads to sanctions and penalties where what transpires is the bureaucratic denial of money and the power to buy food to live. Just think on that - your Government has the right to starve you, to prolong the emptiness of your cupboards, reliance upon the Pot Noodle and dependence on the charity of the food bank.
