DURHAM PRIDE. Lesbians and gay men show their solidarity with the Gala
IT’S 108 years since Labour’s acknowledged founding father Keir Hardie last addressed the famous Durham Miners’ Gala. But at last month’s massive ‘Big Meeting’ attended by anything up to 200,000 people, the spirit of the former Lanarkshire miners leader was there for all to see…and hear.
Hardie of course was the first - though not the only - significant labour movement figure to fuse socialist ideology with a strong commitment to Scottish independence. He was also a pacifist, so would have had no truck with the notion of basing nuclear weapons in his native land.
