The Lady of The Lake

The Hill of the Crown

The Hill of the Crown

This photograph was captured by the author looking north from Duncryne, the Hill of the Crown (OS Ref. NS436859) in February 2016. The scene is the world famous “bonnie banks” of Loch Lomond (Scotland’s natural National Park) set in the Earldom of the Lennox, the northern heartland of the ancient Strathclyde Britons. For the purpose of this story I would like you to imagine standing on Duncryne whilst we examine the phenomenal scenery surrounding us.

It is “the first wonder of Britain” for its obvious beauty through the seasons

The Lake

In one of Britain’s earliest written historical texts, the Historia Britonum, the 8th century scribe Nennius gives the following description:

“The first wonder of the island of Britain is Loch Lumonoy. In it there are sixty islands, and men live there. Around and in it are sixty rocks, with an eagle’s nest on each rock. Sixty streams flow into it, and one out of it to the sea, that is the Leven.”

This is a geographical description of Loch Lomond which empties into the sea via the River Leven and the Clyde estuary. It is the greatest expanse of fresh water in the whole of mainland Britain. It is Britain’s premier Lake, it is “the first wonder of Britain” for its obvious beauty through the seasons. It was known anciently and locally, simply as The Lake.
