What happened in Catalonia on October 1 is, as the news cycle goes, old news. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy deployed some one thousand five hundred and more members of the state military police force, the Guardia Civil, onto the streets to crackdown on an “illegal” act of democracy – the referendum on Catalan independence. This having become something of a proxy conflict for the constitutional debate here in Scotland, it has been informative to read some of the unionist reflections on the actions of the Spanish authorities.
