SO FAR, It’s been what I can only call an “Interesting” year.Among the numerous peaks and troughs in the stormy sea that we, sometimes euphemistically, call ‘life’ (and in my case at least, there are many…), one that sticks in my mind is my recent ‘Hitting Fifty…’, an event, for most, dreaded and/or ignored in turns as we get dragged, sometimes kicking and screaming, towards it.
Now, I need to stress here that I’m in neither camp: I’ve always been a bit cavalier when it comes to my own birthday, even having to be reminded of it in the past, having genuinely forgotten it’s on its way.
Denial maybe? I don’t think so; I tend to remember other people’s fairly accurately, and even get lavish and thoughtful with the gifts when the time comes, though that may be open to argument when considering some of the items I’ve foisted on chums to mark the occasion; a thirty quid butcher’s voucher for an (unbeknownst to me…) newly-turned vegan pal brought a flurry of blows and squeaks of outrage, accusing me of every heinous ecocrime from whaling to the extinction of the Dodo. Fortunately for me, the lack of square sausage in his diet reduced the impact of both the physical and verbal attack, and I left him lying in a corner flailing weakly and wheezing abuse as I fled and hit the stairs.
