A survey by the travel website Travelzoo has placed Italy firmly at the top when it comes to British travellers’ food goals. The study of 1,000 UK holidaymakers identified Italy as the number one destination for cuisine. It found that 45 per cent of respondents go abroad just for the food – and from pasta to pizza, gelato to arancini, Italy’s gastronomic offerings attract the most visitors. Like most discerning Italia! readers, more than half of those surveyed also said they prefer to eat at local, independent restaurants in order to get as authentic an experience as possible, while 28 per cent said they actively seek out places where locals tend to dine, and 28 per cent like to try different street food dishes.
