I’m new to Linux but I’m having trouble choosing a distro to install on my laptop. I can’t make my mind up between Ubuntu and Linux Mint. I understand that Mint is basically Ubuntu under the hood, so would it be better to use Ubuntu?
I tried Mint in a live session and felt pretty at home with it. Ubuntu felt like a more complete and mature OS, but I didn’t feel particularly at home with it. I don’t have any particular specific need, just general laptop use.

If you feel more at home with Mint go with that. You can find yourself getting bogged down worrying about technicalities –I mean Ubuntu is based on Debian – rather than just what works best for you.
You probably feel more at home with Linux Mint as it’s specifically developed with desktop users in mind. Whereas Ubuntu has more of a corporate Approach. There’s a host of distros now – see Elementary, Pop!_OS, Manjaro – where a key rationale for their existence is clean desktop design and integrated core apps.
