Living Blues  |  Living Blues #264
Living Blues #264 (December/January) is a special issue devoted to the blues bass player. Often overlooked in coverage of the genre, the bass has held down the bottom end of the music since the earliest days. In this issue we take a look at eight of the best bassists on the scene today: Jerry Jemmott (Aretha Franklin, B.B. King), Pookie Young (Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials), Larry Fulcher (Taj Mahal, Ruthie Foster), Nellie Mack (Bobby Marchan, Jesse Robinson) E.G. McDaniel (Jimmy Burns), Tanya Richardson (Ruthie Foster), Joe Pratt (Tyrone Davis, Otis Clay), and Chuck Bush (Beau Jocque, Chubby Carrier). This issue’s Let It Roll column focusses on the Big Three Trio, Leonard “Baby Doo” Caston, Ollie Crawford, and one of the most influential figures in postwar blues, bassist Willie Dixon, at Columbia Records on December 30, 1947 where the trio recorded eight of their most popular sides.
All of this plus the latest in Blues News, record reviews, book reviews, and a special Christmas Blues review section.
