WE’VE BEEN waiting for this one. AMD is finally getting the Zen 4 core architecture into desktop APUs. Previously, the only chips with integrated graphics and Zen 4 cores were built strictly for mobiles.
These Phoenix chips are being made available for desktop duty in AM5 sockets, dubbed the 8000G series. As well as Zen 4, we get updated on-board graphics thanks to RDNA 3 GPUs. We’re still running on leaks and rumors (expect more at CES in
January), but we don’t expect any real surprises when they officially drop. There will be a mix of Phoenix and Phoenix 2 versions. The former is a high-performance traditional design, while the latter is a hybrid design using a mix of Zen 4 and Zen 4c cores aimed more towards efficiency. This will be the first time an AMD hybrid design has reached the desktop.
