KIT BUILD

IMMELMANN’S MONOPLANE

Gary Edmundson ventures into a range of painted textures with this Wingnut Wings 1:32 scale Fokker E.II WRITTEN AND BUILT BY GARY EDMUNDSON

Max Immelmann was one of the pioneers of aerial fighter tactics during the First World War, and was awarded the medal “Pour le Merit” after his 8th confirmed victory. Since he was the first aviator to receive this medal, it became known as the Blue Max. He had been credited with 15 victories at the time of his death in June 1916, the cause of which was debated since his aircraft broke apart in mid-air during a battle with British F.E.2bs of 25 Squadron. Either his gun synchronization gear failed and he shot off part of his propeller, or it was hit by enemy fire.

When Wingnut Wings released a number of their kits with a sculpted resin figure, they chose to package Fokker E.II 37/15 with the figure of Immelmann. Although Mike Good’s sculpting and initial casting of the figures was first rate, the production casting appears to be of less quality, and resulted in my figure having the end of his nose missing. I had heard rumours of the figures in these kits being a bit shoddily cast, and to check mine, had to break open the package. Therefore by opening the kit I had essentially “started” it, and launched into its construction.
