Road To Rouen

BMG. CD/DL/LP

How the Britpop imps plumbed hidden depths.

“It would have been a lie to try and do ‘up’ music at that point,” remembered bassist Mick Quinn of Supergrass’s fifth LP, with the death of singer Gaz Coombes’ mother and the tabloid attention accorded to drummer Danny Goffey and his wife Pearl Lowe having temporarily sucked the fun out of the Oxford scamps. Back for its 20th anniversary, Road To Rouen features radio unfriendly singles like St Petersburg, and more than a hint of The Dark Side Of The Moon in the title track, Kick In The Teeth and Alan Parsons Project-worthy opener Tales Of Endurance. An accompanying contemporary live disc features covers of The Doors’ Hyacinth House, Gil Scott-Heron’s Lady Day And John Coltrane and – tellingly – none of their cheeky hits. However, the languid Roxy and the Macca-esque Fin are moving in ways that no other Supergrass songs are. Grace under considerable pressure.

DELIVERANCE
In autumn 2025, the stark landscapes of BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN ’s Nebraska swim back into focus, as its fabled electric version emerges and a Bruce biopic explores the struggles behind the songs. On p42, director Scott Cooper reveals Springsteen’s role in shaping Deliver Me From Nowhere, but not before the Boss himself has his say. “It was an exploratory period,” he tells WARREN ZANES , “and that affected everything I was doing.”
“BRUCE TOLD ME, THE TRUTH ABOUT YOURSELF ISN’T ALWAYS PRETTY”
Nebraska-era biopic DELIVER ME FROM NOWHERE gets under the skin of The Boss. “He came out of it with tears in his eyes,” director SCOTT COOPER tells TOM DOYLE .

A manifeste of musical and spiritual freedom, Axis: Bold As Love was JIMI HENDRIX ar his most exploratory, utopian. But as a new box set explores, notes of unease and psycho-autobiography cut through the Aquarian haze and freaky, proto-stereo FX, as the Summer of Love entered its more conflicted autumn. "It was all vivid colour," peers and Fhu tell MARK PAYTRESS, "with Jimi at the height of his powers."
THE RISE AND FALL OF FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS
When ska-pop contenders The Beat ended in July ’83, bassist David Steele and guitarist Andy Cox were cut adrift. Then they found frontman Roland Gift, lifted a name from a Natalie Wood movie and re-emerged as FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS . 1985 UK hit Johnny Come Home was followed by international mega-smash She Drives Me Crazy in 1989. “We didn’t think it would go that mad,” recall the band of multi-million sales, Hollywood A-list fans and ‘bendy legs’ dancing. “We didn’t know how to manage the energy that we’d created.”
COVER STORIES
YOU SAY YOU WANT A REVOLUTION?
Between 1971 and 1973, JOHN LENNON and YOKO ONO fought to realise their dreams of a better society and, as their friends and peers relate, courted danger from every side. Now collected, augmented and remixed in the new Power To The People box set, the music they made to further their aims speaks to a similarly polarised, and febrile age.“It was really ahead of its time,”
