If 2020 had been a normal year, we’d be getting ready to watch our favorite Olympic sports and events unfold in all their life-affirming, inspiring glory this month. But 2020 has been anything but a normal year.
In March, as the coronavirus spread alarmingly around the globe, country organizations working with the International Olympic Committee began discussing the wisdom and safety of sending their athletes to Tokyo in July and August to compete. The IOC was determined to forge ahead; on 4 March, the organization reported that it had already sold 4.5 million tickets and received over 80 million requests for tickets since sales started in 2019. The show must go on, after all.
