The break offers a range of wild swimming experiences
In 1988 photographer Mel Allen captured an image of a jetty on Ullswater as part of his ambition to build a portfolio of landscape work. Thirty-five years later the image has gone on to be one of the most reproduced posters worldwide. It has sold over 3 million copies internationally and for a long time, it was the only image I held in my mind of the second largest lake in the Lake District.
Ullswater is favoured by many outdoor swimmers as it is an attractive location for an end-to-end lake swim and its location ensures excellent water quality year-round. Like much of the Lake District, Ullswater is a fantastic place for those who love outdoor water and wild walks. For a while the lake’s most notable hotel was Sharrow Bay, popular with celebrities and known for sticky toffee pudding, but since 2017 there has been a new sought-after destination tucked into the lush lakeshore, Another Place.
Arriving on a cool Monday in October I wasn’t expecting such a busy and vibrant welcome at Another Place. The car park was full, people were returning from dog walks and mooching about in white robes. There was an appealing blend of luxury spa vibes with the dirt and wildness of the great outdoors. I waited patiently behind a woman and her yellow lab, who was brushing each paw across the doormat before heading inside. How wonderful to be able to enjoy a hotel like this with your dog! I had arrived with just enough time to be shown to my room before meeting with swim guide and expert Colin Hill, who hosts swim camps, trips and coaching at the hotel.
