Sarah Thomas: Marathon Swimmer
Winter swimming at the Pond is all about metres and minutes not miles and hours
Two days ago, I finished my 47.5mile swim across Lake Mead. It would be an understatement to say, “It was hot.” Even though it was October, I was blasted by summer-like heat of 34 degrees Celsius beating down on my back, while I was cocooned in balmy 24 degree water. It was beautiful, but scorching. When I hauled myself back onto the boat, my entire body was buzzing, yelling at me to cool down, immediately. My crew helped me don a long-sleeved t-shirt, then immediately dumped water on my head and melted ice down my back. Eating a popsicle helped the most as we cruised down the lake on the boat, the breeze and my wet t-shirt creating a glorious air conditioning unit around my internally melting core.
