What a treat it is, in 2022, to have three great, modern point-and-click adventure games in our review section: Return to Monkey Island, The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow, and Sunday Gold. I’m not a man overly susceptible to nostalgia, but there’s something for me about the genre that is just inextricably a part of the soul of PC gaming. Even during the years it lay ‘dead’, its influence constantly broke through, inspiring interactions and puzzles in everything from sprawling RPGs to big-budget detective games. Even at is most dormant, it always seem inevitable to me that it would eventually resurge, but even I couldn’t have predicted how complete that resurrection would be. Now, in 2022, we have an embarrassment of point-and-click riches, both harking back to the past and pushing the concept forward into the future. Lovely stuff.
