IT is more than 100 years since the tragic protest suicide of suffragette Emily Davison under the the King’s Derby horse at Epsom and a couple of hundred more since the first Classic was run. So it was a monumental moment for 24 year old Saffie Osborne, crowned in the St Leger ‘s historic 250th running at Doncaster as the first woman to win a British racing Classic. And what a great success for our sport, demonstrating that grass-roots achievements are pointing the way forward. Saffie, and others like Billy Loughnane, will keep hopes for the future alive and kicking.
