CHESHIRE SIGNALBOX SHUTS: A BR-era lever signalbox at Macclesfield, dating from 1965, has closed after signalling between Prestbury and Congleton was upgraded and transferred to Manchester Rail Operating Centre. A £45m project was completed over the August bank holiday weekend having begun in July 2021 and has involved the replacement of 56 signals with modern LEDs. The final lever was pulled in the signalbox on August 26. Power sources and electrical cabling were also upgraded, as well as changes to two structures carrying the 25,000 volt overhead lines to improve signal sighting.
