Scottish Islands Explorer  |  May-June 2012
Lews Castle is in Stornoway, the administrative centre of the Isle of Lewis; North Rona is not central to anywhere, but is the most remote island in British territorial waters ever to have been permanently settled; it, like Mingulay, featured here, was abandoned; the landscapes of Lewis have been captured by a local artist; the land on Orkney has been dug up by an archaeologist writing here; and three historical characters - Lady Grange and the two Sobieski Stuarts - are brought to life as are the people of South Uist and Eriskay with photographs from the 1950s and '60s. If you are wanting to smile yourself, then read the account in Island Incidents of a meal that sank.
