Gearbox’s flagship franchise has a lot of work to do. Borderlands 2 is already a five-year-old game. Giving it virtual reality means it’s competing with fresh faces such as Astro Bot Rescue Mission and the sublime Tetris Effect – games that use VR in interesting ways and create almost transcendental moments inside that glowing blue headset. And while it’s still a blast to play, Borderlands 2 VR just isn’t another system seller.
It’s not that the core game is bad. Far from it – Borderlands 2 remains a superb shooter, full of outlandish style and humour – but we’re not sure this new release was really needed.
