Director Neil Marshall rose to fame with the carnage and camaraderie of Dog Soldiers and The Descent. After TV success (Game Of Thrones, Hannibal) but movie missteps (2019’s Hellboy), he goes back to basics with his hit-and-miss latest. It’s set in Afghanistan, where bloodthirsty underground creatures set upon a mixed gang of British and American squaddies led by RAF pilot Kate (played by co-writer Charlotte Kirk). The try-hard dialogue often grates and the lead performance is stiff and unexciting, but the good news is that the action and splatter are up there with Marshall’s best.
