IS ALGERIA SAFE?

Our safety expert Daniel Wheeler gives us the lowdown on this North African country

Enriched with remnants from the Roman Empire and the natural beauty of the Sahara, Algeria, Africa’s largest country, is a growing tourist destination. The people are friendly and welcoming to tourists. However, caution should be taken in the Sahel region, where Westerners face a high threat of kidnapping. There is also a high risk of terrorism across the country from the Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and the Jund al-Khalifa groups. According to the FCO, border regions with Mauritania, Libya and Tunisia should also be avoided. As with most big cities, Algiers suffers from some incidents of robbery and theft, although most visits are trouble-free. Avoid carrying large sums of money and don’t travel at night unless absolutely necessary.
