When
Smutty Smiff spotted his first Teddy Boy on the streets of south-east London in the early 70s, it set him on the path to a life in music that eventually saw him share stages with some of rock’n’roll’s most iconic names.
Born Stephen Dennis Smith, he lived in Ilford and Seven Sisters then moved to Basildon after a year in Glasgow’s notorious Drumchapel housing scheme. Speaking from his home in Reykjavik, where he now lives with his Icelandic wife and two sons, Smutty positively bubbles with enthusiasm. With new recordings on the way, his radio show, The Devil’s Jukebox, still going strong after 12 years, and a new book, Smutty: The Only Essex Boy In Warhol’s Factory, in the offing, he shows no sign of letting up.
