With the crack of a broken surfboard and a maniacal laugh, The Surfaris’ Wipe Out exploded out of radios in the summer of 1963. While the driving surf instrumental may have been the soundtrack of a spectacular ride ending in a tragic fall, it was just the beginning for four rock’n’roll obsessed teenagers from Glendora, California. Almost six decades later, Bob Berryhill is still leading a version of The Surfaris and he spoke with Vintage Rock about the making of a classic record.
How did you start playing music and meet the other members of the band?
