Winter running poses an array of challenges, and one of the biggest pitfalls you’ll encounter during the colder weather is joint pain. Cold weather achiness is thought to be brought on by poor blood circulation, caused when your body conserves heat and sends it to organs such as the lungs and heart, which results in constricted blood vessels.
Less blood low makes these areas of the body colder and stiffer, which can cause pain in weight-bearing joints such as the hips, knees and ankles. It’s also thought that cold weather brings about an inflammatory response in joints, which could add to discomfort.
