It has been less than a year since my father committed suicide, an event that has changed my life forever. The grieving process has been difficult. But one aspect that had not made the process easier is the stigma surrounding suicide.
Upon mention of the word, people turn their heads; they feel uncomfortable; eyes widen. This reaction damages not just those left behind, but also those suffering from depression. People, especially men, feel ashamed and hide their feelings. And when people feel uncomfortable discussing mental health, everyone suffers. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK.
