Yes & No Magazine  |  Issue 01:03
Continuing our commitment to discover new voices, this Issue's Cover Story is an In Conversation with French sisters Brigitte Lacombe and Marian Lacombe — photographer and filmmaker, respectively. The rare interview features photographic portraits of multi Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell, Yeonmi Park, North Korean human rights activist, and Nimco Ali, co-founder of Daughters of Eve, among others. We spotlight contemporary Chinese artists brought together by curator Victor Wang for a groundbreaking exhibition at Sadie Coles HQ, London. The 01:03 Centrefold is by Chicago-born Nick Cave. Plus: artist Tom Burr further develops his New Haven Artist/City Bortolami / Marcel Breuer Building project; we combat depression and mental health, and look at the education system in England and Wales. Featured artists and photographers include, Iraqi-born Ahmed Alsoudani, American Tony Matelli, Brits Merlin Carpenter and Ozziline Bill, Dutch-born Matthijs de Bruijne, and Åsa Johannesson from Sweden. We meet Dr Polly Carmichael, director of the Tavistock’s Gender Identity Development Service. And this season’s menu is courtesy of Emily, daughter of Michelin-starred Michel Roux Jr. All this in addition to new writing and poetry, and a whole lot more… Excellence is in the detail.
