Having grown up in Lima, what proved the biggest culture shock when you moved to Werder Bremen in Germany?
I was shocked at how clean the city was, but the biggest shock was definitely the weather: completely different to what I was used to. It was cold, it rained a lot, and the snow, wow – that was something I’d never seen in my life!
You sealed a big move to Bayern Munich in 2001. What made you choose Bavaria?
There were a few massive teams interested: Bayern, Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Juventus. I chose Bayern because I was already in the Bundesliga and it was also the best offer at the time. At 22, that’s what you’re looking for. Most of the decisions I made in my career were good and that was probably the best. I don’t regret it.
