Drott consists of Enslaved guitarist Ice Dale, Ulver live drummer Ivar Thormodsæter and cellist Matias Monsen. The trio create mind-melting vistas of cinematic violence, tempered with moments of meditative bliss or wailing despair. It’s tempting to say “Only Drott is Drott” and leave it at that, but this all has some sort of precedent. Dark ambient, deathindustrial, twisty prog rock, musique concrète and weirdo soundtrack music have all existed before. It’s just that nobody thought to do it all at once. On paper, it sounds fairly impenetrable, but Drott’s second album is actually addictive and adventurous, revealing new layers with each listen. It’s like a long-lost Italian horror movie soundtrack as interpreted by a Nordic death cult. ■■■■■■■■■■
