Sól Án Varma trip the blight fantastic at Roadburn
WHEN THE LEGENDARY Roadburn festival commissions artists to compose new music for future events, it seems to bring the best out of people. There have been countless examples over the years, but recent releases by Jo Quail (The Cartographer) and Triptykon (Requiem) are good benchmarks for how much creative heart and soul a Roadburn endorsement can inspire. A collaboration between members of some of Iceland’s most prominent black metal bands, Svartidauði and MisÞyrming chief among them, this 70-minute, episodic odyssey was performed once and once only, at the Dutch festival in 2018, and it absolutely fits the bill as another extraordinary one-off splurge of ingenuity.
