How far out is too far out? Nibiru have been edging towards an answer to that question for the last decade, leaving the rest of us in a crumpled, bewildered heap. The Italian masters of shamanic post-metal have long since abandoned any pretence that they’re playing the same game as other bands. Anamorphosis comprises a single, 56-minute piece that begins with several minutes of claustrophobic noise, before evolving steadily and seamlessly into a synapse-frying, psychedelic nightmare of wild proportions. With tribal drums, malevolent mantras, obsidian drones and lots of feedback and static, Nibiru have injected some real atmosphere and drama into this, but the overwhelming sense is of a band sharing a moment of dark ritual revelation and revelling in the transformative power of a really fucking loud cacophony. Any further out, and Nibiru will disappear from view. ■■■■■■■■■■
